Fiza Rafeek's chilling poem about surviving this pandemic.
I went for a ten-minute adventure today
Felt the pedals push back under the soles of my feet
Felt the rays of sunlight bounce joyfully across my face
Felt the grip of my handles coarse against my palms
Heard the birds sing beautiful melodies
Rhymes pumping against my ears
Saw the grass fly
Cradled between the wisps of the wind
That's when I passed by an eerie window
The house was lively within its walls
Beyond its inner walls though
Grass greedily grew
Dirty dust developed depression
Wild webs wickedly warned
Time stopped still
We’re mentally ill
Everything turned into a peculiar frame
A wind that had once cradled the grass gently
Now viciously ripped it from its roots
Beautiful melodies turned into waning cries
Hinting at the tragedy that had befallen our world
My palms began to sweat
They lost grip of my handles of candied reality
The bitterness of the virus crept into the folds of my tongue
The sunlight beamed down onto my face
Skin exposed in between the cracks of my mask
Lips yearned to taste the warmth of the sun
The pedals under the soles of my feet
Became more
Urgent
Desperate
Scared
Gripped the handles of reality tightly
Pushed pedals frantically
A coward craving for certainty
Stumbled upon my refuge
Shut my windows
Wishing for a hero
