Under the Ramadan Moon

Hiba Fathima

It was an early morning in May 2019, I woke up to the glimpse of light coming from the window. I smiled as I looked at the day — it was the first day of Ramadan!

I jumped out of bed. Brushed my teeth, changed my clothes, did Wudhu and joined my dad to do Fajr. After praying I went to go get breakfast but then stopped when I realized that I had to fast. I heard my younger sister Naila playing around. I grabbed my bag and filled it with my books, pencils, and other items for school. I heard the school bus horn, hugged my parents goodbye and ran for the door. I sat down and joined my friends in a conversation. We reached school and the hall was crowded with people. I got into my class. I was very hungry, bored and tired for some reason.

After about 7 hours, I came back home on the bus. As I opened the door I saw my sister eating at the kitchen table. I tried to ignore my stomach growling as I went into the living room. I sat down and my mom came in. She asked how school was and I told her everything that happened and sighed.

She offered to play chess so we played around 3 or 4 games after which I went into my room and played a few games. I also did my homework with my sister’s help. To be honest, she didn’t really like to help because she doesn’t understand it, but she did scribble all over my papers so that counts right?

I did some other things that I do on normal days like drawing, praying, playing, video games, and sometimes studying but I was still very tired and half starved. It was late evening. I stared at the beautiful sky “ Those mountains are so small from here I wonder how they’ll look up close,” I said to myself. “And the sun, it’s very hard to believe that the earth is like a gumdrop when you compare it to the sun.” But then all my thoughts were erased by my sister’s sudden ear piercing scream. It nearly broke my eardrums. I went to go see what happened and it seemed like my sister was just playing. I saw my earmuffs lying on the table. I picked it up and wore it just in case my sister screams again.

Then I smelled some delicious food. I ran over to the kitchen and my jaw dropped to the floor! There was almost all of my favorite food on the table. I tried reaching for some food but then I stopped myself. “Come on, pull it together me. It’s not like you haven’t seen food in your life before”.

After a while my parents finally came and sat down. Naila followed. We did dua and ate a bit of food. But I stuffed it in my mouth like a hungry wolf. Then we all prayed. Naila just imitated me. Then we sat down for dinner. I continued stuffing food into my mouth. My mom glared at me, closed her eyes and shook her head. Naila imitated her as well — she closed her eyes and quickly shook her head. I groaned. After dinner, I went to the patio and went back to staring at the sky. It was night and the moon lit up the darkness. I took a chair and put it in the grass. Naila followed me and sat right beside me. “You know it sure is amazing to sit out here under the Ramadan moon.”
